In six hours we boxed 10 Walleye in the 3.5-7.5 lb range running big boards with reef runners and crawler harnesses on jet divers . All aboard had an excellent time dredging the water column for fillets ..... Tight Lines to all !
After pulling an all nighter with our clients we decided to take a few friends out the same afternoon . Launching back at Walnut Access at noon we had little expectations given the time of year . Much to our surprise we located scattered walleyes in 30 - 50 feet of water running west to the state line .

Clients Drew and his father Andrew did well on our resident Lake Erie Walleye . We started trolling the big boards in 12 - 20 FOW picking at walleye around midnight . These sportsmen knew how to have a good time and thats exactly what we did . Hans provided as an excellent first mate on this outing and kept us laughing into the wee hours of the morning.
The night bite was a little slow by our standards but we managed to land 9 Walleyes in 6 hours of trolling . We boxed 7 of the 9 in 3.5 - 7.5 lb range on bomber long A's & Renosky's ran off the boards . We had excellent weather and a flat lake on this night ; bearing witness to a beautiful sunrise . It is an amazing feeling boating trophy Walleye and having no boats in sight . Thank you Drew & Andy for the memories and commradere we shared! I just received my new trolling motor in the mail today .. Time to get it into action and that exactly what we found ! Trolling lures just under the surface of water at night we managed 9 Walleyes in the 3-7 lb range in two & 1/2 hours .. Running boards in the full moonlight and trying to keep lines untangled was a managable task ! Two limits would have been had however we needed to be in for the morning work routine so we let a few LOL swim . Fish frys abound here in Lake City ....
I included pics from the previous night 3 walleyes boated by myself alone and a brown trout caught fly fishing on Elk Creek earlier in the day ..... The smolts ( young of the year steelhead ) and brown trout are congregated in the fresh , cold flowing water of any Elk cold water trib . The raccoons have been picking em off and if those fish do not find the lake soon they will perish due to the high water temps as of late . If anyone would like to book a night trip don't hestitate to call me the fish will be in close for another month .... Keep reels a screamin' ........... Capt . Don After a few bumps in the road in relation to my gas trolling motor failing me offshore ; I can confidently say we are in for an awesome season. Although I have been unable to get offshore ; the recent calm lake activity allowed for some close to shore nighttime "resident walleye" action . On Thursday night I fished wading the Lake shoreline and was rewarded with a 6 lb walleye for a relatively small effort .
The following night offered a glass lake . I took advantage of this using only an electric trolling motor and my small vessel ( 14ft aluminum ) I landed 4 fish in the 3 - 6lb range close to shore . Two were caught trolling and two anchored up in 7 FOW throwing bomber long A's ! Walleye activity was excellent with fish actively feeding on the surface heavily from 10 PM until 2 AM ! The walleye caught had alot of smelt ( local baitfish) in thier bellies . I am happy to say the catching of these Walleyes will help our future steelhead fishery as they devour many young of the year steelhead smolts (entirely different species of fish than smelt) leaving the tributary mouths in the spring ! Reports of perch being caught in the 35 FOW range or 1 mile offshore have been spread and I will definately verify the rumor soon. I also included a picture of an average Lake Erie smallmouth and the feast had after the Walleye night . |
